Comedian John Ryan has developed a comedy show that celebrates mental health and well-being and proves that laughter really is the best medicine.

Serious Glee Comedy is an innovative comedy show that covers difficult subjects around health and wellbeing in a way that is topical, sensitive and very funny. It's on Tuesday 12 April 2016 at The King’s Head, 2 Crouch End Hill, London N8 8AA. Tickets are just £7.

Supported by The Men’s Health Forum, award-winning comedian John Ryan is joined by fellow comedians who base their comedy on personal experiences ranging from depression and anxiety to alcoholism and cancer.

Through a unique style of stand-up, the show takes a light-hearted yet touching look at a widespread and increasing problem: one in four adults will experience a common mental health problem such as depression or anxiety at some time in their lives. One in five men will die before they are 65 years old.

John Ryan says: 'Comedy is a great way of tackling issues that people may not ordinarily want to talk about. This show is also a great night out. It’s not preachy, it’s not a lecture it is a collection of real people taking a light hearted approach to how they have dealt with health issues.'

‘The Men’s Health Forum is proud to support such an innovative and entertaining show,’ said the Forum's deputy CEO Tracy Herd.

John Ryan is a multi-award winning stand-up comedian and writer. His awards include the Royal Society of Public Health best project 2015 and the Scottish mental health and arts award 2011 and he has won prestigious accolades at the Leicester and Edinburgh festivals. Also appearing are Natasha Donovan, Suzi Bennett, Nina Benjamin, Stu Calder and Stephen Rice.

Serious Glee Comedy: an innovative upbeat show that will make you listen, learn and laugh.

The event will be filmed as part of a series of training videos for the Men’s Health Forum.

The Men’s Health Forum need your support

It’s tough for men to ask for help but if you don’t ask when you need it, things generally only get worse. So we’re asking.

In the UK, one man in five dies before the age of 65. If we had health policies and services that better reflected the needs of the whole population, it might not be like that. But it is. Policies and services and indeed men have been like this for a long time and they don’t change overnight just because we want them to.

It’s true that the UK’s men don’t have it bad compared to some other groups. We’re not asking you to ‘feel sorry’ for men or put them first. We’re talking here about something more complicated, something that falls outside the traditional charity fund-raising model of ‘doing something for those less fortunate than ourselves’. That model raises money but it seldom changes much. We’re talking about changing the way we look at the world. There is nothing inevitable about premature male death. Services accessible to all, a population better informed. These would benefit everyone - rich and poor, young and old, male and female - and that’s what we’re campaigning for.

We’re not asking you to look at images of pity, we’re just asking you to look around at the society you live in, at the men you know and at the families with sons, fathers and grandads missing.

Here’s our fund-raising page - please chip in if you can.
