The Men's Health Forum has received a grant from the Bupa UK Foundation to improve men's mental health in mid-life.
The Forum will design a new service for men that aims to support and improve their mental health and wellbeing in this critical life-stage.
Good mental health underpins health and wellbeing and is important for everyone. For many people, mid-life can be a time of increased challenges, responsibilities and pressures, in their working lives, family lives and relationships.
Martin Tod, the Men's Health Forum's CEO, said:
Men may fail to recognise or act on warning signs, and may be unable or unwilling to seek help from mental health support services. This new service funded by Bupa UK Foundation aims to remove the barriers present with traditional services and provide more cost-effective earlier intervention, along with signposting to appropriate services, to improve the health and wellbeing of men in middle-age.
The new service designed with and for men in mid-life will provide them with free, confidential and anonymous online support. The service will be accesible via computer, tablet or mobile phone.
The service will supplement the Forum's ongoing work on male mental well-being including our:
- Men's Health Week 2016 is themed "Beat Stress"
- acclaimed man manual 'Beat stress, Feel better',
- practitioners' 'How To' guide to improve mental health services for men,
- toolbox talks,
- 'How To' workshop for commissioners and providers, and
- comedy events by John Ryan to celebrate mental wellbeing.
The project will be led by Chris Stein who has promised to blog regularly on the development of the project. His first blog is about the why of the project.
