A new study suggests that obese men who lost weight were more likely to get their partners pregnant.
A team from the University of Sherbrooke in Canada presented a new approach to boosting sperm in obese men at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society. James Gallagher, Health Editor for the BBC News website reports:
In 65 couples who had been referred to a fertility clinic, the men were sent to weekly group sessions on nutrition and physical activity for a year. The study showed that men who conceived were those who had lost the most weight.
One of the researchers, Dr Jean-Patrice Baillargeon, said: ‘This is the first prospective study suggesting that male partners who improve their weight also increase the odds for couple to conceive.’
The Men’s Health Forum’s “10 things every man can do to improve fertility” advises men to maintain a healthy weight and improve their diet to boost the sperm count and avoid erectile dysfunction.
